We borrow from the next column along.
Our sum now really becomes this:

                            2  14
                          - 1   8

We have 12 in the tens column = 20.
We have 14 in the units column = 14.
20 +14 = 34 so this is the same sum.

Because 14 is bigger than eight we can do this:

                          - t   u
                          - 2  14
                          - 1   8
                          - 1   6
